Before Europeans colonized the land in 1536, this country was called Charrúa by the native Indians. The name Uruguay comes from the language Guaraní. Uruguay, for the early part of the 20th century, was a fully functioning country but during the 70s the military took over and fought a long, hard war against the Marxist Guerillas, Tupamaros. Today, it has a stable democracy with a two-tier parliament. The country has a long coast line with many, many beaches. Uruguay was the first Latin-American country to sanction same-sex relationships with rights similar to the Swedish partnerships laws. There is a lively gay scene and generally the place is open to LGBT people.
