After the town of Öjebyn was burnt down, Piteå was built in the same spot in 1667. Another fire ruined large parts of the city in 1721 when Russian troupes wreaked havoc in northern Sweden. The oldest building in Piteå is the cross shaped timber frame church built from 1684 to 1686.
Piteå is known as a summer city with beaches and leafy parks. In July every year a festival called "Piteå dansar och ler" (Piteå dances and smiles) ir organised, with its own LGBT part, called "Kärlekslandet" (Love country)
Piteå has an active LGBT organisation (RFSL) that organises parties and works for the rights of LGBT people.
