Vilnius is beautifully situated in the southeast part of Lithuania, where rivers Vilna and Neris meet. The first proof of the city's existence is from 1323 and it has been the centre of culture as well as war between nearby super powers. Vilnius has a central part in Polish as well as Belarusian history and the city once had the largest Jewish library in Europe. The Jewish traces remain, despite the Holocaust. There are gay bars and discos despite overt dislike for the gay movement in politics and media.
